knave_of_swords: Diana as Wonder Woman, looking forward and above (wonder woman)

Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson

When I first heard about the premise for Kelly Thompson's Absolute Wonder Woman, I was dreading the comic. Diana without Themyscira or the Amazons? How could Diana be Diana without those? It sounded to me like someone's edgy reimagining of Wonder Woman without anything that made her Wonder Woman. Then, Kelly Thompson proved me wrong in the best way possible.

It's so good. The Diana characterization is perfect, and I love her reimagined aesthetic. I love her relationship with Circe even as part of me boggles at the idea of them loving each other like they do here. I love how the goddesses are working in the background to slowly shape Diana into the weapon that they need her to be.

I need this series to last at least three more years with Kelly Thompson at the helm. I'm going to buy every trade paperback. I really did not expect to get a take on Diana/Wonder Woman that I would like ever since Tom King took the reins of the mainline title, at least not for another 5+ years, but holy wow, Absolute Wonder Woman is just amazing.

If you like Wonder Woman, read it!! Especially if you're like me and love Greg Rucka's runs writing her (especially post-Crisis), the characterization feels very pulled straight from that era to me.

Homestuck? In 2025? More likely than you think

A few weeks ago I was looking for another podcast to listen to and saw a rec for Homestuck made this world: "a show where two cultural critics, one an old Homestuck fan and the other a new reader, work through the landmark multimedia webcomic and discuss it with the intent to critically analyze and contextualize it and its effects on the world with a blend of media theory, game studies, and internet history." I just finished episode 7 part 3 and I've been enjoying it a lot. Interesting, and lots of nostalgia too. I look forward to them getting to the parts where I stopped reading, I don't exactly remember where that was.
As a bonus, I really enjoyed my friends' reaction when finding out about it: Homestuck? In 2025??! xD

So the timing of finding out about the planned animated pilot was especially funny. The trailer is... fine, I guess? I feel fairly neutral about the trailer itself. I think you could probably make a perfectly average, decent, maybe even good pilot (or even season 1, maybe.) But so much of what made Homestuck special relied on its medium and I think any adaption to another medium will inevitably fall short. And that's not even mentioning the scale problem.
It'll be made by the creators of Hellaverse, which I haven't seen but I have friends who are big fans, I'll have to find out if they were Homestuck fans too and either way it'll be funny.

(The announcement coming shortly after the Unofficial Homestuck Collection was taken down because of legal issues and people including Hussie being dicks might have been a coincidence or not, but I'm curious if there'll be an actual good way to reread the webcomic in (close to) its original form by the time the pilot comes out. Not that I want to, thankfully, the podcast helps with that.)

Reading updates

Infinite Dendrogram 22: We finally return to Ray's story in the city of Gideon! That took a while. The last two volumes were still good reads, but damn it I want the main plot! A fun read, but nothing in particular caught my eye in it.

The Husky and his White Cat Shizun 8 & 9: And more plot happens! I love how it's unfolding. I love the consequences that Mo Ran is facing and how he's being such an iron woobie about it, and Chu Wanning's memories? Amazing. Love it.

The Disabled Tyrant's Beloved Pet Fish 4: And we finish the series! I read another review saying that the series kind of dragged, but I enjoyed every word spent with Li Yu and Mu Tianchi. Their kids!!! The secret plot! Ah, it was great. I love this series.

Future reading: currently working on Silverglass, and am considering Remnants of Filth.

Diegetic Exchange

I recently ran my first full size exchange! I've run a few flash exchanges before, but I wanted to make [community profile] diegetic_exchange a full size one with guaranteed gifts and a longer timeframe. It's basically an exchange for in-universe media and documents, but the idea started as an exchange for in-universe RPF. As nominations went on, I realized that it made sense to expand it to in-universe documents in general, so that's what ended up happening.

It ran super smoothly! I was super surprised by that tbh. Reveals also happened exactly as scheduled, no delays! All in all it was a great experience and I'm really glad I ran it. Honestly I'll probably run it again next year? I'm already looking forwards to it.

What I requested:
  • DCU (Comics) - in-universe fanfic
    • Batman/Bruce Wayne (DCU)
    • Superman/Clark Kent/Lois Lane (DCU)
    • Superman/Lois Lane (DCU)
  • Pokemon (Main Video Game Series) - other in-universe documents
    • WB: In-Universe Academic Research On/About Pokemon
  • The Scum Villain's Self Saving System - in-universe social media, other in-universe documents
    • WB: Forum comments on the rewritten Proud Immortal Demon Way
    • WB: News articles/social media posts about the rewritten Proud Immortal Demon Way
    • WB: Peerless Cucumber's comments on chapters of the rewritten Proud Immortal Demon Way

What I got!:
 r/PIDW [REWRITE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!]
It's forum posts about what if the updated version of the story got posted to the same forums that PIDW was posted on, and how the original fandom reacts to it. It's so much fun! Definitely read it if you like SVSSS.

What I made:
  • In-universe RPF of Katniss Everdeen/Peeta Mellark, set during Catching Fire. I had a lot of fun writing it! It's definitely OOC, but in ways that I liked making reflect on the unnamed capitol citizen that wrote it. Rated G, 614 words.
  • An annotated bibliography chronicling the debate regarding the violin battle between Johnny and The Devil, from the song The Devil Went Down To Georgia. Featuring undead composers beefing with each other and god's twitter account. Rated G, 527 words.

Seliph art I commissioned!

I recently decided that I wanted a new default icon, and that I wanted it to be a Seliph drawn by [tumblr.com profile] asphodelis ! It turned out perfect, he is soooo cute and it's such a pretty drawing!

How is it August already

I went swimming today even though it was raining (lightly), yay minor accomplishments. I'm currently house-sitting for my parents and there's a great spot for swimming nearby, but due to a combination of bad weather and other plans I only went swimming twice so far. Better than nothing though.
Also, "bad" weather isn't really accurate, I like that it's not as hot and humid as it's been recently.

Recently I went on a bike ride for the first time in a while with my gf and found out that I'm even more out of shape (figuratively) than I thought, not great. I should improve that because biking can be very convenient. Maybe I should buy myself the kind of headphones I can use while wearing a helmet.

The second half of July felt very busy: my weekend classes started again, [community profile] battleshipex was going on (the collection is open and currently in the anon period), work is approaching the busiest time of the year, and I had plenty of plans with other people. For example I finally bought a couch, and I finally made it to karaoke again!, yay, it'd been a while. I maaay (definitely) have gotten less than optimal amounts of sleep at times, which does not help my energy levels at all. But at least there were also many fun things.

Past Life, the new Life Series season, is great so far, one of my favorite seasons already only four episodes in. It's not an ideal one to recommend to new people because many of the best parts build on the history between the players, but I have been watching some episodes with my gf while explaining some of the background, and we recently finished watching Grian's Third Life too.
I'm behind on both watching and note-taking but I'm having a great time.

Apparently I haven't posted since February?

Man, it's been so long... March and April was a really slow period for me fandom-wise. But in May I started playing The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy! And wow, I love it. I have so many thoughts. I might make a series of blog posts about each route and my thoughts on them? I'm aiming to get all 100 endings. So far I've completed: Killing Game, Rebellion, V'ehxness, Multiple Eitos, Slasher, Mystery, Box of Calamity, Conspiracy, 2nd Scenario, Reset, Goodbye Eito, Eva, Coming of Age, and Comedy. I'm currently working on Steady Fundamental and picking at the rest. I think this is my newest forever fandom, the way that Fire Emblem is for me.

I also played [community profile] battleshipex this year! Yay Team Strawberry! I had a lot of fun. I wrote 4 works and over 6k words, and drew 3 things! This was the best team I've ever been on, even though I loved Team Tunnel last year, and had so much fun my first year playing on Team Frost. I haven't really had a chance to look at my gifts yet, I'll probably start reading them after I post this entry, but I'm delighted just looking at the tags and summaries. Maybe I'll do a round-up?

Relatedly (or maybe just to me), I've been wondering what to do about archiving my fic on dreamwidth. I like having it here, but I am so behind and just feel less strongly right now about AO3 and the OTW being annoying and bone-headed. Maybe I'll just post links to the fic with summaries?

In a similar vein, I'm trying to pivot away from using Google Docs to write my fics, due to them locking some people's fics recently. I rarely share the links to my fics, but it makes me feel better having all my fic be on my laptop. I'm trying out Scrivener right now. It's got a lot of bells and whistles that I don't really need, but I've been kicking around an original idea in my head, and may try those features out to write a long original work sometime. So far I like Scrivener, but I'm not in love with it. I haven't written a whole lot using it, though, this decision to move away from gdcos came after Battleship was pretty much over.

Also, new default icon! I commissioned a FE4 artist who draws Seliph in a way that I absolutely love, and I love how adorable he looks! I really liked Syaoran as my icon, but I think this Seliph icon is going to be a permanent change. Unless I commission the same artist for a similar drawing of Leif... it's a tempting thought.

In personal news, nothing much has changed, but I'm happier at my job now that I've switched restaurant locations within the airport. There's still some friction with the servers, but it's just a little bit sometimes and not nearly as bad as it was before. I'm coming up on a year of living on my own out of my parents' house! It's been great. Being financially independent can be really stressful sometimes, but it really makes me feel fulfilled to be taking care of myself 100% financially.

Oh, I think I forgot to post this before-- but I've officially realized that I'm trans. In retrospect, it was obvious. Oh well, I'm finally here. Agender is what I feel best describes me right now, and pronouns aren't a big deal to me right now but I do prefer they/them.

Editing to add!!: I also got a bluesky account! I don't want to use twitter anymore, but I enjoyed its functionality. Here's my profile: bsky.app/profile/tacticianjack.bsky.social
